The Different Kinds Of Martial Arts
69
Martial arts have been around for a very very long time. You see it in movies, video games and even sports. To perform some of the moves you see require many years of training. But there’s more to martial arts than fancy moves.
There are many benefits to
learning a martial art. Martial arts training can be a very good exercise for
you if you don’t have any weights. It sharpens your mind and makes you one with
your body. Learning martial arts will also help you if you ever find yourself
in a situation where you or someone you know may be in danger.
Learning certain martial arts
may be a major asset if you are planning on pursuing a professional fighter
career. Such as a mixed martial artist, a boxer, or a kickboxer. Or if you want
to be an action movie star, or a fight choreographer.
But in the end, there are
many martial arts out there and they are all helpful for you both physically
and mentally to get you prepared for the unexpected. These are a few martial
arts you should check out:
Muay Thai- Very
good martial art for stand up fighting. There are a few classes that teach how
to defend against weapons, but overall a very good style if you’re looking for
a starter martial art.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ)- Great martial art for ground fighting and grappling. Brazilian
Jiu-jitsu was made popular by the Gracie family and their impact on mixed
martial arts. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu differs from Japanese jiu-jitsu because in
BJJ most of the lessons start from the ground up. Whereas Japanese Jiu-jitsu it
starts from standing. This is also a good starter if you are looking to pursue
a fighting career.
Boxing- Good
art for standing fighting. This martial art teaches you the sweet science of
fist fighting. Throughout history, boxing was one of the most best sports out
there. The fights were just amazing, 2 fighters going at it with each other,
one throws a punch, the other bobs and counters and the guy falls to the mat.
It’s a great martial art to start with but because it lacks kicks and
grappling, you should take boxing with another martial art to be more well
rounded.
Krav Maga- From
the country of Israel comes a fighting system known as Krav Maga. It’s a system
that mixes everything from amature wrestling, to grappling of jiu-jitsu, to
knife fighting and punches of boxing. It is a complete system that teaches you
how to fight on all levels. As well teaches you how to defend against any given
situation whether its a knife, gun or a fist fight against more than 1 person.
It is a good system to learn if you are looking for a self defense martial art
or looking for a complete package on fighting.
Sambo- Made famous by the MMA
legend, Fedor Emelianenko, combat sambo offers various levels of fighting. It’s
very similar to modern MMA and is a martial art used by martial artists as well
as much of the Russian Military. It is a great martial art to learn if you want
to be a mixed fighter.
Jeet Kune Do- The
man who invented this martial art is a legend in both martial arts all together
and movies. This man is named Bruce Lee. This style is a fighting style that
can be mixed with any style to make enhance it. His famous line on water really
matches the martial art. It’s a very good hybrid style and can be mixed with
almost any martial art.
There are thousands of
martial arts out there. All have their own advantages and disadvantages. But if
you are to learn a martial art, make sure you learn a variety of martial arts
and don’t commit to just one style.
