Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

One of the most popular martial arts in modern day fighting. One of the most famous practitioners was the Gracie family. During the 90s, Gracie Jiu-jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was made popular by people like Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, and other Gracie members. Than when mixed martial arts evolved in the 2000s, Brazilian jiu-jitsu became one of the many styles that were a good combo mix because of how good Brazilian jiu-jitsu is on the ground.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was founded by Mitsuyo Maeda, a very skilled Judo grappler. Many people say that BJJ was founded by Japanese Jiu-jitsu, but it was actually founded by Judo. Maeda challenged many of the martial arts out there.

He then met with Gastao Gracie in Brazil who helped Maeda promote his style of fighting. Than Maeda taught Carlos Gracie his style, and Carlos’s younger brother, Helio Gracie learned and became the founder of Gracie Jiu-jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a very useful style for self defense whenever a fight goes to the ground. It is also useful if you want to become a MMA fighter. In mixed martial arts today, the majority of fighters around the world take BJJ. Some of the camps/teams that teach fighters are:

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has also been proven useful in hand-to-hand situations to incapacitate or restrain people.

So in the end, if you’re looking for a martial art style where you want to be dominating on the ground, BJJ is a good style for you. And if you are looking for another style to combine with your stand up style of fighting, BJJ is also good for you.
